Hey mama! So, you’ve been dreaming of starting a little garden, but the idea of digging, planting, and keeping things alive sounds like… a lot? Don’t worry—you’re not alone, and you definitely don’t need to have a green thumb to get started. Gardening can be simple, fun, and even a little therapeutic—plus, it’s an awesome way to get the kids involved and save money on groceries too!

This guide is your easy-peasy, no-stress starting point for beginning a garden. Think of it like chatting with a friend over coffee while we plan your very first garden together.

Why Even Start a Garden?

There are so many benefits to starting a garden, from physical and mental well-being to environmental and community advantages:

  • Fresh food right from your backyard or balcony.
  • Cost Savings: growing your own herbs, veggies, and fruits can save money on groceries.
  • Quality time outdoors with your kids and a natural form of exercise for the family.
  • Less food waste because you pick what you need
  • A calm, peaceful hobby for busy minds to help reduce stress and anxiety.

Plus, it just feels good to grow something with your own two hands.

Step 1: Choose Your Garden Style

You don’t need a huge yard or fancy setup. When we decided to start growing some of our veggies, our only available space was on the side of our house, next to the A/C unit (not a very good idea since we live in Florida). Let’s find a style that works for your space:

Container Gardening

  • Perfect for balconies, patios, or small spaces
  • Use pots, buckets, or repurposed containers. Even though we have a larger area to plant, we love to grow our herbs in pots. It gives us the flexibility to move them when needed.

Raised Beds

  • Great for backyards
  • Easier on your back and keeps soil healthy

In-Ground Gardening

  • Traditional and budget-friendly (our favorite way to plant or should I say my husband’s favorite:)
  • Best if you have space and healthy soil

Start small. Even 3-4 containers on your porch can make a big difference!

Step 2: Pick What to Grow

Here’s the golden rule: grow what you love to eat. No use growing kale if no one in your house will touch it!

Beginner-friendly plants:

  • Herbs: basil, mint, parsley, chives (they grow like champs!)
  • Lettuce & spinach: fast-growing and low maintenance
  • Cherry tomatoes: small and sweet, kids love them
  • Green beans: easy and productive
  • Zucchini or cucumbers: perfect for summer snacks

Start with 3-5 different plants. Trust me, it’s enough!

Step 3: Gather Your Supplies

You don’t need to go all out at the garden store. Here’s what you actually need:

  • Containers or garden beds
  • Potting mix or soil (not just any dirt—look for “vegetable garden soil”)
  • Seeds or starter plants (starters are great for newbies)
  • Watering can or hose
  • Sunlight: most plants need 6+ hours/day

Optional but helpful:

  • Gardening gloves
  • Small trowel (little shovel)
  • Plant labels (DIY with popsicle sticks!)

Step 4: Plant & Water

This is the fun part! Follow the instructions on your seed packets or starter plant tags.

Quick tips:

  • Plant after the last frost in your area (Google your city’s frost date)
  • Water deeply but not too often (plants like a good soak, not a daily splash)
  • Morning is the best time to water

Stick your finger into the soil—if it feels dry 1 inch down, it’s time to water.

Step 5: Keep It Going (Without Stress)

Gardening is a learning process. Even experienced gardeners lose a plant or two sometimes!

Keep it simple:

  • Check on your plants every morning (kids love this job!)
  • Pick off yellow leaves and keep the area tidy
  • Harvest when veggies are small and tender
  • Don’t stress if something doesn’t grow—it happens to everyone

Bonus: Fun Ideas for Kids in the Garden

Let the little ones join the fun! Here are a few easy ways:

  • Give them their own small pot to care for
  • Let them decorate plant labels
  • Teach them how to gently water
  • Hunt for worms or ladybugs
  • Pick and taste fresh herbs together

Gardening teaches responsibility, patience, and appreciation for nature. Plus, it gets them off screens!

You’ve Got This!

Starting a garden isn’t about being perfect. It’s about growing something and enjoying the process. Whether you end up with a few cherry tomatoes or a full salad bowl from your backyard, you’re doing something amazing for your family and the planet.

So go ahead, pick up a few pots, some soil, and a couple of seedlings. Set them out where they’ll get some sun. Water them, love them, and let them grow.

Before you know it, you’ll be the mama with the mini garden that everyone wants to learn from. 🌿

Happy planting, friend!
